One Day in Rome? Maximize your sightseeing!

Do you only have one day to spend in Rome? We arrived in Rome the day before we were scheduled to board a cruise out of the Civitavecchia port. This is what our day looked like:

  • 2:35 PM – Land at Fiumicino airport
  • 4:00 PM – Arrive at hotel
The Spanish Steps are a popular spot to visit on your One Day in Rome!

  • Take a leisurely, meandering stroll to Capuchin Crypt, visiting the Spanish Steps along the way.
  • 6:00 PM – after hours tour of Capuchin Crypt & Museum and Catacombs of Santa Priscilla
Take an after-hours tour of the Capuchin crypt during your One Day in Rome!

The Capuchin Crypt and Catacombs of Santa Priscilla are amazing to see after hours. Pictures are not permitted inside. It can be a bit gruesome, like chandeliers made of finger bones, so use caution taking young children on the tour. There were a few spots where folks needed to duck, but I am a bit claustrophobic and didn’t have any issues being underground in the catacombs.

The Trevi Fountain tops the list of must-see places on your One Day in Rome!

  • 8:30 PM – Walk to Trevi Fountain, past the Pantheon, to Piazza Navonna, then back to the hotel
  • 8:48 PM – Sunset

After visiting Piazza Navonna, we circled back around to the Spanish Steps again. By this time it was after sunset, and plenty of people were still milling about the streets. Several groups of musicians entertained the crowds. Just follow your ears, and you will likely pop out from a side street onto the main area in front of the Spanish Steps.

Next Day:

Don't miss a trip to see the Sistene Chapel on your One Day in Rome!

Sistine Chapel

  • 7:30 AM – Metro/walk to Vatican Museum
  • 9:00 AM – Tour Vatican Museum & Sistine Chapel
  • 12:00 PM – head back to hotel
  • 1:00 PM – shuttle to Port Civitavecchia, Rome

The Vatican Museum and the Sistine Chapel are awe-inspiring. Everywhere you look, there is so much to see. Be careful in the Sistine Chapel if you are part of a group. Once you exit the chapel, there is no way to get back in.
